Cedar Bay Baptist Church - 1959
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CEDAR BAY BAPTIST CHURCH

In November 1948, the first service was held in the old Mess Hall of the Veterans Housing Project, adjacent to Imeson
Airport, with 8 in attendance.  Mr. L.R. Taylor, Superintendent of Missions, of the Franklin Street Baptist Church; Rev.
H.H. Thompson, Pastor of the 11th Street Baptist Mission, a Mission of Franklin Street Baptist Church were the
organizers.

The first Pastor was L.R. Toole, who served for 6 months.  The first minutes of Cedar Bay Road Baptist Church were
recorded September 5, 1949.  The Church purchased a lot on Cedar Bay Road and one of the buildings from the
Veterans Housing Project.  The building was moved and set in place on the Church lot and work began on it February
23, 1950.

The first Business Meeting was held in the Church on March 29, 1950.  The first Church services were held in the
building on the first Sunday in April 1950.  Church Dedication services were held on the 3rd Sunday in June of 1950.
The Church was organized on July 10, 1950 with 35 members.  The first Building Fund was established with a $1.00
donation.  By October 1, 1957, the Church membership had grown to 107.

The Church built a beautiful new brick Sanctuary and moved into it in April 1959.  In May 1962, the Church purchased
the present site and moved from Cedar Bay Road.  In May 1963, the Church started building a temporary Sanctuary on
the Main Street property. Subsequently, building started on the permanent Sanctuary and the Church moved into the
present building in December 1964.

A new Pastor was called in 1965, during which time many improvements were made to the Auditorium.  New furniture
and carpeting was installed in 1974.  The Church entered into a $250,000 bond issue to finance the new Educational
facility which was dedicated in 1976.

Former Pastors of Cedar Bay are as follows:

Brother Vernon Peacock, 1953 - 1958
Brother Marvin A. Tyler, 1959 - 1965

Our current Pastor is Brother Bill Tyler.  He and his family was called to Cedar Bay May 30, 1993.  As of 1995, the
church became debt free.  Since then, the Lord has blessed us in many ways such as:

>> Equipping us to start 3 mission churches:
Harvest ISC (Indigenous Satellite Church) at Oceanway Village
Discovery ISC in Orange Park, FL
Celebration Baptist Church in Yulee, FL.

>>Sending us on mission trips to:
Honduras - 8 of the last 9 years to minister to various villages.
Iowa in 2002, where we also hosted Backyard Vacation Bible School in two areas.  There were 30+ decisions for
the Lord!!
Bahamas in 2000, where our youth group was afforded the opportunity to share the gospel.

>>Began a Puppet Ministry that has blessed the hearts of all ages:
They travel to various churches and have competed in Atlanta, GA where they were blessed with both a gold and
bronze medal for their outstanding performances.  They also perform at our neighborhood block parties that are held
throughout the year in various neighborhoods.  Along with the puppets, we have booths for face painting, power
bracelets, snow cones, snacks, blood pressure readings, and much much more!  We have clowns that attends the block
parties to entertain the children.

God has blessed in and through each of the numerous ministries of the body of Christ at Cedar Bay.  We look forward
to joining God in His work as we live in the expectancy of the coming of our blessed Lord Jesus.
